RRR-, St. A. Poniatowski, Double Gold 1771, SAMPLE in Bronze R8

A great rarity, the coin has so far been known only from the collections of such numismatics greats as Henry Karolkiewicz, whose piece came from the collection of Virgil M. Brand, and from the collection of Wladyslaw Terlecki. The offered piece is therefore the 3rd known piece. The rarity of this coin is eminently evidenced by the fact that neither Plage nor Berezowski recorded its existence!
The trial issue of 1771, was connected with the need to counteract the influx of counterfeit Prussian coinage on the territory of the Republic. A project for minting coins in pure silver was submitted to the minting commission. At the will of King Stanislaw August Poniatowski himself, wishing to convince himself of the size of such a coin, a series of specimens were made, the stamps for which were engraved, by Jan Filip Holzhaeusser, one of the most outstanding medalists of the time.
Pieces of this issue minted in pure silver are rare, but regularly appear on the numismatic market. Prints in copper, are known for all denominations from the penny to the thaler, but all are extremely rare, known from single pieces!
